At a time when the word maverick has worn thin, there is something tremendously satisfying about seeing Elliott Carter take yet another bow. Since Mr. Carter has long been a fixture of the music establishment, the term might not seem to fit. But given his tenacious pursuit of an idiom defined by relentless challenge and continual change, few living composers warrant the label maverick more than he does.
